Our specialty hemp bedding is perfect for the floor of our deep litter henhouses. It’s the most absorbent animal bedding on the market. It has low dust, is compostable, and sustainable. We suggest using one bale to two bales to start in the deep litter bed for a 4’×6′ henhouse.

HEMP BEDDING FAQ

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR HEMP BEDDING

What is the deep litter method?

The deep litter method is a way of composting in your henhouse by letting the litter and chicken droppings build up over time.

How much hemp bedding to I need to put in my henhouse?

We suggest starting with a layer of 4-6 inches and sprinkle more on top if it starts to smell. See our conversion chart near the top of this page.

What do I do to maintain it?

If it starts to smell in your henhouse, you can add more hemp bedding on top. You can also stir it up with a rake. The stuff on the bottom is like new as it breaks down.

how often do I need to clean it out?

The deep litter method along with our hemp bedding makes it so you can go a year or longer without cleaning it out.

doesn't it smell if i don't clean it out?

Nope – not if it’s done properly (and you don’t overload your henhouse with chickens). Our hemp bedding is the most absorbent on the market, and if the droppings are dry, they won't smell.

Is it healthy for my chickens if the hemp is in there so long?

Yes. Your goal is to get a good balance of carbon (the hemp) and nitrogen (chicken droppings) to create a good environment for beneficial microbes to do their job. These microbes actually eat and break down the feces and consume unhealthy bacteria, leaving good bacteria behind. The microbes also help prevent infestations of lice and mites in your flock.

Should I add Diatomaceous Earth (DE) to the hemp bedding?

No. DE will harm any beneficial microbes that help break down the chicken dropping and hemp bedding.

When I do clean out my henhouse, when I can I use the litter in my garden?

We suggest leaving it to sit for a few months before using it as fertilizer. That's why late fall is a great time for a deep litter cleanout. You can put it on your garden beds over the winter. You can put it at the base of trees and bushes immediately.

What makes the hemp bedding so absorbent?

The inner hurd of the hemp plant is what is used for the bedding and is the most absorbent part of the plant. (The outer part is used for textiles) We use a combination of big and small pieces of the processed and dedusted hurd for maximum absorbency. It's because it's so absorbent that it keeps the litter dry, keeping your flock healthy.

Why does the hemp bedding look different sometimes and the weight varies?

Hemp grows fast, making it a sustainable choice, but because it's a natural plant, its properties can vary with each harvest due to the weather. We use cubic feet as a measurement because the weight can vary if the hemp is drier. But drier is a good thing!
