Clean Coop. Happy Hens. Healthier Planet.

Give your flock a cleaner, drier, and more comfortable coop with Carolina Coops® Hemp Hurd Bedding. Made from premium hemp hurd, this natural poultry bedding helps absorb moisture, reduce odors, and support the deep litter method inside your chicken coop.

Available in both small hemp hurd and large hemp hurd, this bedding gives chicken keepers more flexibility. Small hurd offers excellent absorbency and coverage, while large hurd creates better airflow, structure, and cushion in the litter bed. Together, they make hemp one of the best bedding choices for backyard chickens, ducks, and other animals.

Whether you clean your coop often or prefer a low-maintenance deep litter system, hemp hurd bedding helps keep your coop dry, fresh, and easier to manage.

Each bag is approximately 5 cubic feet

Square Foot Conversion:

2 inches ≈ 30 sq. feet | 4 inches ≈ 15 sq. feet | 6 inches ≈ 10 sq. feet

We suggest using 2 to 8 bags to start in the deep litter bed for a 4’×6′ henhouse.

The deep litter method is one of the easiest ways to manage chicken coop bedding. Instead of removing all the bedding every week, you build layers over time. The carbon from the hemp bedding works with the nitrogen from chicken droppings to create a naturally composting environment.

To start, add a 2–4 inch layer of hemp hurd bedding to your henhouse floor. Use small hurd for extra coverage and absorption. Use large hurd for structure, airflow, and long-term litter depth. Add more bedding on top when needed.

Both small and large hemp hurd are great choices for chicken coop bedding. Each one offers unique benefits depending on how you manage your coop.

Small Hemp Hurd

Small hemp hurd has smaller pieces, which means more surface area for moisture absorption. It spreads easily, fills gaps well, and helps create a soft, even layer across the henhouse floor. Because the pieces are smaller, this bedding offers great coverage and helps absorb wet spots quickly.

Large Hump Hurd

Large hemp hurd has bigger pieces that create more loft, airflow, and structure in the litter bed. This makes it especially helpful for deep litter systems because it helps prevent the bedding from packing down too quickly. The larger pieces help keep the bedding loose and breathable, which supports a healthier deep litter environment.

The Best of Both Worlds

For many chicken keepers, using both small and large hemp hurd is the best option. The small hurd helps absorb moisture and cover the floor evenly. The large hurd adds structure, cushion, and airflow. By combining small and large hemp hurd, you can create a cleaner, drier, and more balanced coop environment.
